Fact Check: 2017 video falsely claims to show Indians celebrating Pak win in T20 World Cup

Hyderabad: Pakistan registered its first ever win over India in an ICC World Cup cricket match in the 2021 T20 World Cup on 24 October. Pakistan won by 10 wickets. Since then, several videos of people celebrating the win have been circulating on social media.

BJP spokesperson Ajay Sehrawat tweeted a video of a crowd bursting fireworks and claimed that the video shows Indians celebrating the Pakistan win. He tweeted, "They celebrate the martyrdom of Indian soldiers, this (loss in cricket) is a small matter. Can't expect patriotism from traitors." (translated)

Several other social media users have also posted the video. It is being claimed that the celebration took place recently.

Aaj Tak had also published the video on its YouTube channel while reporting that Pakistan's win was being celebrated in Srinagar.

Fact Check

The viral video is from 2017.

Pakistan won against India in 2017 and its win was celebrated in Srinagar on a massive scale. Several social media users and media organizations had posted videos of the celebrations. NewsMeter ran an advanced keyword search on Twitter and found the same video posted by verified profiles in June 2017. Kashmir-based award-winning journalist Ahmer Khan and many others had posted videos of celebrations in Srinagar.

In 2017, Pakistan beat India by 180 runs in the ICC Champions Trophy final. Many Indian Kashmiris had celebrated the win by bursting fireworks. Those who traditionally supported Pakistan in cricket, especially against India, waved Pakistani flags, chanted "Jive Jive Pakistan (long live Pakistan)" and burst fireworks in Srinagar. A Facebook page, Indian Exponent, had posted similar videos and images in 2017. The same man and truck seen in the recent viral video can be seen in the image posted by Indian Exponent. Getty Images, too, had carried a similar image and wrote that this celebration took place in the old city of Srinagar after Pakistan won against India in the Champions Trophy final at The Oval in London on 18 June 2017.

Clearly, a video from 2017 from Srinagar celebrating Pakistan's victory against India in the Champions Trophy final is being shared as recent. Thus, the claim is false.
