Fact Check: 25,000 Indian soldiers did not return their Shaurya Chakra medals to support farmers protest

Hyderabad: An article by Prajasakti, a Telugu newspaper published in Andhra Pradesh, claimed that 25,000 soldiers of the Indian Army have returned their Shaurya Chakra medals to express solidarity with the farmers during the ongoing protests.

Fact Check:

NewsMeter checked the official government website that lists the name of the Shaurya Chakra awardees and found that only around 2,000 names were mentioned.

Apart from this, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) tweeted, "Claim: Prajasakti newspaper has claimed that 25000 soldiers of the #IndianArmy have returned their Shaurya Chakra medals in solidarity with farmers' protest. #PIBFactCheck: This news is false. Only 2048 #ShauryaChakra have been awarded from 1956 till 2019."

The PIB also released a statement that said, "This is completely false, utterly baseless and malicious in nature and aimed at damaging reputation, honour and pride of our valiant defence forces. In fact, between 1956 to 2019, the actual number of Shaurya Chakras awarded stood at 2,048."
