Hyderabad: WhatsApp users are sharing a video showing the extent of crimes against women in Andhra Pradesh claiming that the state has the highest crime rate against women in the country. The video features placards with the faces of victims with the text underneath that reads, "#APUnsafeForWomen."

The video is from an event in March 2021 conducted by the Telugu Desam Party on the occasion of International Women's Day. The event was organised as a protest against the atrocities being perpetrated on women and girls in the state during the YS Jagan regime.

According to the 'Crime in India 2020' report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) released in September 2021, a total of 17,089 crimes were committed against women in Andhra Pradesh in 2020. Andhra Pradesh witnessed a 3% decline in crimes against women in 2020 compared to 2019. According to the NCRB, Uttar Pradesh had the highest crime rate against women in India in 2020, where a total of 49,385 crimes were committed against women in the state (as per data on page 247 of the report).
In Andhra Pradesh, 534 cases were registered for kidnapping and abduction of women, whereas 9,109 cases were registered in Uttar Pradesh in the same category. In Andhra Pradesh, 4,886 cases were registered against assaults on women with the intent to outrage her modesty, whereas 12,605 cases were registered in Odisha. In AP, 49 cases were registered against cybercrimes, whereas 526 were registered in Odisha. In AP, 435 cases were registered against dowry, whereas 3,031 cases were registered in Uttar Pradesh.
The NCRB is yet to release data for 2021. Currently, Uttar Pradesh has the highest crime rate against women in the country.
