Hyderabad: With the onset of the second wave of COVID-19 in the country, several people are sharing home remedies claiming that they can prevent or even cure the infection.

Recently, one such claim doing the rounds of social media states that COVID-19 can be prevented by consuming betel leaves (famously known as paan in India). The remedy has reportedly been propagated by one Dr. M.R Sharma.

The claim that betel leaves can help prevent COVID-19 infection is FALSE.

According to several reports, betel leaves have several health benefits and can be used as an analgesic, antiseptic, and antifungal properties.

Betel leaves are also known to build immunity to some extent. However, but they are no scientific evidence to suggest that they can help fight COVID-19 infection.

PIB fact check debunked this claim and clarified that the claim is FALSE. It tweeted that the claim that consuming betel leaves can prevent the coronavirus and cure an infected person is fake news.

On the Mythbusters section of its website, WHO has also clarified that boiled betel leaf does not cure COVID-19. It is important to wash hands regularly, keep at least one meter distance from others, and eat nutritious food, it said.
