Fact check: Boy in viral image is not Rinku Sharma of Delhi, but Anurag Poddar of Bihar

Hyderabad: An image of a woman holding her son is viral on social media. Users claim that he is 25-year-old Rinku Sharma, who was stabbed to death in Mangolpuri on February 10.

Netizens posted this image with the hashtag #JusticeforRinkuSharma and falsely claim that the boy in the viral image is Sharma.

FACT CHECK:

NewsMeter found that the boy in the image was not 25-year-old Rinku Sharma. The youth in the picture was identified as 18-year-old Anurag Poddar, who died in October 2020.

We performed a reverse image search and found a fact check report by INDIA TODAY from October 2020. The boy in the image was identified as an eighteen-year-old, who was killed after Bihar police allegedly opened fire amid a clash over a delay in Durga Puja immersion in Munger on October, 26, 2020.


Another 2020 fact check by FACT HUNT identified the boy as Anurag Poddar.

We also found reports on the Hindi daily `Dainik Jagran' and News18 Hindi that carried similar visuals.

Violence broke out in October 2020 during the immersion Durga Puja statue in Munger, Bihar. Eighteen year- old Anurag Kumar was shot in the head and died on the spot. Around 30 people were also injured.

Evidently, it is clear that the boy in the viral image is not Rinku Sharma who was stabbed to death in Mangolpuri.
