Fact Check: BTS band members killed in plane crash? Viral post is fake

Hyderabad: A photo of a plane crash is going viral on social media with the claim that members of the Korean band BTS were killed in the crash.

Fact Check:

The claim is false.

NewsMeter found no news reports that supported the claim that BTS band members were killed in a plane crash. Moreover, the band has been active on social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram even after the claim began circulating. The band also took part in a live stream on 20 October 2021 on the South Korean app V Live. Clearly, the band members are still alive.

Secondly, NewsMeter performed a reverse image search and found the same viral image of the plane crash in a report by the Ukrainian National News Information Agency from 23 March 2018. The image was from a crash in Honduras.

AP Images had also published the photo on its website on 22 May 2018 and said that the private jet had crashed off the end of the runway at Tegucigalpa's airport in Honduras. It had said the crew and passengers were rescued.

AFP News Agency had published a video report about the plane crash on its YouTube channel.

Clearly, an image of a 2018 plane crash in Honduras is being falsely shared with the claim that members of BTS were killed in a plane crash.
