Hyderabad: A video circulating on social media shows a dramatic altercation involving a policeman and a civilian. The footage captures the moment a policeman slaps a man, who retaliates by slapping the officer back. The civilian escalates the confrontation by grabbing the collars of two policemen and misbehaving with women officers at the scene.
Social media users sharing the video are insinuating that the attacker belongs to the sand mafia of the Hindu Brahmin community and the incident occurred in a BJP-ruled state.
An X user shared the video and wrote, āLook at the hooliganism of Brahmin Mishra sand mafia under BJP government. He entered the police station and slapped the policemen.ā (Translated from Hindi) (Archive)
NewsMeter found that the claim is false. The incident occurred in Congress-ruled Karnataka.
We listened to the audio carefully and found that the persons were not speaking Hindi, which hinted that the video may not be from North India. This was confirmed in a reverse image search which led us to the same video shared by a Facebook page, Gulbarga Times, on December 28, 2024.
The post stated that the video showed the son of a former municipal chairman slapping a police constable in front of a police station in Mandya, Karnataka.
NDTV published the video on December 28, 2024, under the title, āKarnataka News | Clash Erupts At Police Station As Former Municipal President's Son Assaults Cops.ā
According to the report, a violent altercation occurred at the Pandavapura Police Station in Mandya when Sagar, the son of former municipal president Jagadish, attacked police officers during questioning related to a land dispute. The incident began when Sagar allegedly assaulted the complainant and later turned violent against the officers. He has since been placed in 14-day judicial custody.
Hindustan Times and Live Mint also reported the incident on December 29 with the same details. There was no mention of sand mafia in any of the reports.
Therefore, we conclude that the incident occurred in Congress-led Karnataka, not in a BJP-ruled state. The claim is false.
