Hyderabad: Social media users are claiming that US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld committed suicide.

The claim is False.

NewsMeter searched for the reason behind the death of the former Secretary of Defense. According to a report by The Princetonian published on July 10, 2021, Donald H. Rumsfeld, a proponent behind the U.S. invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq who served twice as Secretary of Defense under President Gerald Ford and President George W. Bush, died on Tuesday, June 29 at his home in Taos, New Mexico. He was 88 years old.

According to Rumsfeld's spokesman Keith Urbahn, the cause of death was multiple myeloma.

We then searched for an official statement and found a press release by the US Department of Defense published on June 30, 2021. We found a Statement by Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III on the passing of Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld

According to a report by US Today, Rumsfeld died of multiple myeloma.

We did not find any report that would claim that Donald Rumsfeld died by suicide.

It is therefore evident that the viral claim is False. Donald Rumsfeld died of multiple myeloma.
