Hyderabad: Social media users are claiming that a 75-year-old man married his 15-year-old daughter to have a son.

Fact Check

The claim is False.

We performed a Google Reverse Image Search and found a report by India Today that was published on August 18, 2017, headlined `Sheikh marries minor: Practice continues in Hyderabad even 26 years after Ameena case'

According to the report, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi has requested External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to rescue a 16-year-old Hyderabadi girl from Oman. Girl's parents have complained that their daughter was married to a 65-year-old Omani national without their consent.

We then found another report by the Hindustan Times on August 18, 2017.

According to the report, Sayeeda Unnisaa, a resident of Nawab Saheb Kunta of old city lodged a complaint with Falaknuma police that she recently received a call from her daughter saying she was being physically tortured by her Arab husband, Sheik Ahmed, in Oman's capital Muscat, and she was desperate to return to India.

"When she pleaded with him to send her back to Hyderabad, he reportedly said he had bought her by paying Rs 5 lakh to Sikandar and that she would be allowed to return only after the amount is returned to him," she told the police according to the report

Sayeeda said her sister-in-law Ghousia got her daughter married to the Omani national a few days before Ramzan festival in collusion with her husband Sikandar. Sayeeda also claimed that she was not interested in getting her daughter married to the man but Sikandar and Ghousia convinced her that her daughter would lead a luxurious life in Muscat and showed her some videos about the lifestyle of the prospective groom.

It is therefore evident that the claim is False. The image of the father and daughter is old and is shared with false claims. The girl in the image is 16-year-old and not 15 who was forcefully married to a man in Oman.
