Fact Check: Did Haryana government announce hike in old-age pension by Rs. 250?

Hyderabad: A poster by the Haryana government claiming that it has increased the allowance under the old-age pension scheme by Rs. 250 per month is being widely shared on social media.

A Twitter user who shared the poster said the elderly, widows, and disabled people in Haryana will now receive a pension of Rs. 2,750 per month.

The claim is false.

NewsMeter performed a keyword search but did not find any relevant information or reports about the Haryana government's decision to hike old age pension.

We visited the website of the state government's department of social justice and empowerment.According to the latest document uploaded on the website related to the Old Age Samman Allowance Scheme, the rate of allowance as of 1 April 2021 under the scheme was Rs. 2,500 per month for those who are 60 years or above and those who are domicile or resident of Haryana state.

The allowance for widows and disabled persons is also Rs. 2,500 per month.






According to reports by India TV and Hindustan Times published on 3 January 2020, the Haryana government had announced a hike of Rs. 250 in all social security and old-age pensions with effect from January.

"Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Friday announced a hike of Rs. 250 to Rs. 2,250 in all social security and old-age pensions with effect from this month, putting an additional burden of about Rs. 70 crore per month on the state exchequer," read the report by India TV.

We also found a tweet by the Directorate of Information, Public Relations and Languages Department of Haryana from 28 October 2021. The tweet read, "Alert: The following information/photo is being spread on social media regarding increase in pension in Haryana which is completely wrong. The model code of conduct is in force in the state due to the by-election to the Allahabad assembly seat. No decision has yet been taken by the Haryana government regarding the increase in pension."

It is therefore evident that the claim made through the viral post is false. The Haryana government has not announced a hike in the old-age pension in the state.
