Fact Check: Did Hindus attack Muslims after watching The Kashmir Files?

Hyderabad: A video of group clashes between two groups is viral on social media.

It has been claimed that after watching 'The Kashmir Files', Hindu mob attacked Muslims.

The video is of CCTV footage in which a man can be seen wielding a sword at some people sitting inside a shop. After this, another man comes and starts attacking with sticks. In defense, people are also seen throwing some items at the attackers. At the end of the video, some people wearing Muslim caps are seen coming out of the shop.

Through the video, users are claiming that this is New India where Muslims will always have to be ready for their safety. With similar captions, this video is being shared on Facebook and Twitter.

Fact Check

The claim is misleading.

NewsMeter began its investigation by performing a Google Reverse Image Search. It led us to a report published by News18 Gujarati on March 20, 2022. A screengrab of the viral video can be seen published as a reference for the report.

According to the report, "The shopkeeper in Bhathe area of Surat was asked to pay money by the anti-social elements of the area. Although the shopkeeper was attacked with a sword by these elements protesting the matter, the whole incident was captured on CCTV."

Apart from this, a tweet of the incident was also shared by News 18 Gujarati on their Twitter handle on March 20, 2022.

We found the video uploaded on the YouTube channel 'BKB Gujarati News'.

Hence, the claim is misleading. Nowhere did the report or any description of the video state it was a Hindu-Muslim clash.
