Fact Check: Did India Today report that Tamil magazine Ananda Vikatan has been mortgaged?

Hyderabad: A photo of India Today Tamil magazine cover is going viral on WhatsApp. The text on the cover states that the editor of Ananda Vikatan, a Tamil weekly magazine published from Chennai, has mortgaged the magazine for Rs. 50 lakh a month.

The text on the cover reads, "Srinivasan mortgages Ananda Vikatan for Rs. 50 lakh a month."

Fact Check

At first glance, it can be observed that India Today's Tamil magazine cover is not original. The text on the cover has been edited.

The Tamil version of India Today was stopped in 2015. India Today had decided to shut down print editions of its magazine in three languages: Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam. Aroon Purie, founder-publisher and former editor-in-chief of India Today, said the decision was made as the group was not able to absorb the losses anymore. NewsMeter contacted the organisation and it confirmed that Tamil magazines have not been printed since 2015.

S.G Suryah, a BJP media spokesperson from Tamil Nadu, also clarified via Twitter that it has been many years since the Tamil edition of India Today was discontinued and that the cover picture was photoshopped.

Evidently, the post is fake.
