Hyderabad: A video claiming that the minority community members vandalized Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar's statue in Kerala, is going viral on social media.
Fact Check
The claim is False.
NewsMeter performed a Google Reverse Image Search of a screenshot from the viral video, which directed us to a video news report uploaded on August 26, 2019. At the 30 seconds mark, one can see the viral video clip. The thumbnail of the video reads: "Vedaranyam (Tamil Nadu), Aug 26 (ANI): Statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was vandalized by a person amid clashes between two groups in Tamil Nadu's Vedaranyam on August 25."
We then found a video uploaded by TV9 Telugu. According to the bulletin uploaded on `TV9 Telugu Live' on 26 August 2019, Ambedkar's statue was damaged in Vedaranyam, Tamil Nadu.
We then found a tweet by Express Chennai on August 26, 2019. "Twenty-eight people have been arrested after clashes broke out between two caste groups in Vedaranyam town in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday and a statue of BR Ambedkar was vandalized. The statue has now been replaced by a new bronze one," it reads.
It is therefore evident that the claim is False. The video is not from Kerala but from Tamil Nadu.
