HYDERABAD: A newspaper clipping about SP patron Mulayam Singh Yadav is viral on social media.

" SP patron Mulayam Singh Yadav, playing the Muslim card, has said that if his party comes to power in UP, then all Muslim youths will be given jobs", reads the English translation of the message.

Netizens are sharing the image claiming that Mulayam Singh Yadav has said that if his party comes to power in Uttar Pradesh all Muslim youth will be given jobs.

The viral claim is old and misleading.

NewsMeter found that newspaper clipping has been available on the internet since 2016. Social media users have posted the same image in 2016. In September 2016, the Samajwadi Party government was ruling in Uttar Pradesh and the next elections were going to be held in 2017. This indicates that the viral clipping is not linked to the 2022 UP elections.

NewsMeter found a news report by Navodaya Times from 2016 that states that although Mulayam Singh Yadav did say a few things in favor of Muslims, he did not promise to give jobs to all Muslim youth.

Instead, he made a statement that was for all youths (no specific religion). He said: "The youth have still not got the jobs...this time around when we come back to power, all will get employment. None of the youth will be without work".

The same was also reported by News 18 and Business Standard. Mulayam Singh Yadav had spoken about giving jobs to all youth if the Samajwadi Party comes to power in 2017.

Clearly, the headline is misleading. Neither is this viral clipping linked to the 2022 Uttar Pradesh elections nor did Mulayam promise jobs for Muslim youths.
