Hyderabad: A news bulletin claiming that Russian President Vladimir Putin has asked India not to interfere in the Russia-Ukraine issue is being widely shared on social media. The news bulletin further claims that Mr. Putin has said India should be ready to face the consequences if it interferes.

The viral news bulletin was tweeted by the district secretary of the Indian National Congress U.S Nagar Uttarakhand. The tweet had over 2K retweets and over 6K likes.

Fact Check

The claim is false.

NewsMeter noticed that the viral screenshot of the news bulletin had the CNN News logo. So, we searched the CNN website for the news bulletin and found one with a similar thumbnail. However, the text read, "Top Russian official jokes about interfering in U.S election in 2020." This was aired on 12 November 2019.

Taking a cue from this, we performed a keyword search which led us to a tweet by 'The Lead CNN' from 13 November 2019. The Twitter user had shared a screengrab of a news bulletin that is similar to the viral one.

Lastly, we compared the viral news bulletin with the original and found several similarities between the two. This proves that the viral news bulletin has been morphed. Hence, the claim that Russia has warned India against interfering in the Ukraine conflict is false.
