Fact Check: Did Taliban threaten India over Kashmir?

Hyderabad: A video of the Taliban threatening India over Kashmir is viral on social media.

"I have heard that India is threatening Pakistan with war for a while. I want to tell the Hindu government of India that we are with the Pakistani army and the nation. You cannot do anything to us. Like we made the US cry, we will do the same to you (sic)," reads the English translation of Urdu speech.

The video has surfaced after the Taliban has occupied the country by overthrowing Ashraf Ghani-led government in Afghanistan.

A social media user shared the video and captioned, "ą¤²ą„‹ ą¤ą¤¾ą¤ˆ ą¤§ą¤®ą¤•ą„€ ą¤ą„€ ą¤† ą¤—ą¤ˆ ą¤¤ą¤¾ą¤²ą¤æą¤¬ą¤¾ą¤Ø ą¤øą„‡" (Here brother, the threat also came from the Taliban).

The claim is misleading.

NewsMeter performed a Google reverse image search of different keyframes and found that the video is two years old and has been on social media since 2019.

We found the same video posted on Facebook in February 2019. A Facebook page, 'Allah hu Akbar' had shared this video titled 'Afghan Taliban ki India ko Warning'. It is captioned in Urdu, an English translation of which reads, "Afghan Taliban's open warning to India. Even if they dare to attack Pakistan, they will make India like the United States and Russia."

Another Facebook page, 'City Mobile Communication', shared this video and captioned it in Urdu. "Share more so that this video reaches India. Long live Pakistan, long live Pakistan Army. Today's big news is that the Mujahedeen of Afghanistan has threatened India. If you poke Pakistan, they will do to you what they did to Americans and Russians," reads its English translation.

We found the same video uploaded on YouTube on March 22, 2019, with thumbnail 'Afghan Taliban Hard Reply To India'. View the video here.

We also found in an interview of Mohammad Suhail Shaheen, Taliban spokesperson to India Today in which he clarified that his group does not want to be part of the rivalry between India and Pakistan.

We did not find any recent media reports about this claim. However, we were able to find a video that dates back to 2019.

Therefore, it is evident that the viral video is not recent.
