Fact Check: Did UP government say no to student scholarships this year?

Hyderabad: ANI has reported UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced to deposit Rs 1100 directly into the parents' account instead of giving free clothes and bags to the children in the government schools.

An image of a news bulletin is widely being shared on social media claiming that due to budget constraints, this year students will not be receiving scholarships in Uttar Pradesh. A newspaper clipping is also being shared with a headline that reads, "Ayodhya to become a solar city which will be rejuvenated with two thousand crores (sic)".

Fact Check

The claim is False.

NewsMeter searched for news reports published by the mainstream media related to the viral claim. However, the team did not find any news related to the UP government not giving scholarships due to budget constraints.

The team found several tweets by the 'Government of UP' about scholarships. A tweet on the scholarship on September 19, read, "Steps towards Sarvajan Uday - Scholarship worth ā‚¹ 13,620 crores distributed to 1.79 crore students of the minority class, scheduled caste/tribe, backward class, and general category."

Another tweet by the Government of UP on August 20, 2021, read, "Special scholarship will be given to Sanskrit students."

In the bottom right of the news bulletin, the team noticed a word that read 'PICKU'. Taking a cue from this, the team searched for the word on the internet and found an application on the play store that stated "PickU is an easy-to-use photo editor and photo background eraser! You can use it as a background eraser and background changer, blur photos background, and add portrait beauty effects. PickU makes photo editing extremely easy and fun."

The team then noticed several errors on the viral news bulletin, which are not usually done by the mainstream media.

Error 1: The absence of a colon ( : ) after UP, mainstream media generally uses a colon after the state or city and then reads the headline.

Error 2: Writing 'ą¤Øą¤¹ą„€ą¤‚' instead of 'ą¤Øą¤¹ą„€'. In Hindi, no is written as 'ą¤Øą¤¹ą„€' and not with a dot 'ą¤Øą¤¹ą„€ą¤‚'.

Error 3: UP CM Yogi Adityanath's picture being upside down (mirror image).

On performing a Google Reverse Image Search of the image of Yogi Adityanath, the team found the original image in a report by Economic Times.

The team also compared the original image and the viral image of CM Yogi Adityanath.

The team had also noticed that the background of the news bulletin was different from the original.

The team then searched for the news related to the viral newspaper clipping. The team found a similar newspaper clipping on the Facebook page of the Government of UP on September 03, 2020.

It is therefore evident that the viral claim is False. The news bulletin stating, 'Students not getting scholarship due to budget constraints this time in UP' is edited.

Meanwhile, the newspaper clipping 'Ayodhya will become solar city from two thousand crores' is from an article published by Amar Ujala in 2020. Social media users are falsely linking two unrelated news.
