Fact Check: Did Vanathi Srinivasan say shell resign if her party loses local body polls?

Hyderabad: A news card claiming that Vanathi Srinivasan has said that she would resign as an MLA even if BJP loses a single ward in the Coimbatore South Assembly constituency, is viral on social media.

"I will make the BJP candidates win in all the local wards of Coimbatore South Assembly constituency. I will resign as MLA even if I lose a single ward: Coimbatore South constituency MLA Vanathi Srinivasan," read the text in the viral news card.

Fact Check

The claim is False.

NewsMeter found that the news card had a mention of a media organization 'Puthiyathalaimurai TV' at the bottom.

Taking a cue from this, we searched whether such news was aired by the organization. However, we did not find any reports or any such news card on the social media handles of the media organization.

We then performed a keyword search with a few specific words, which led us to a video uploaded on the Facebook page 'Vikatan EMagazine' on January 31, 2022.

The video was of an interview of Vanathi with reporters on the election, where she can be heard saying, "Preparations are underway for the BJP to contest all the wards in Coimbatore."

Nowhere during the interview did she mention that she would resign from her post if she loses the election.

Meanwhile, a report published by 'Nakkheeran' on January 31, 2022, stated that AIADMK leader Annamalai has said that the BJP will contest the forthcoming local government election alone. It has caused a stir in the political arena. Nainar Nagendran's speech is being seen as a split in the AIADMK-BJP split.

Speaking to the reporters in Coimbatore, BJP national women's team leader Vanathi Srinivasan said, "Our state president has decided to contest alone. All preparations are underway for the BJP to contest in all the wards. "

We lastly compared the viral news card with that of 'Puthiyathalaimurai TV' social. It was evident that the viral news card was edited.

According to a report published by Deccan Herald published on January 31, 2022, "As the AIADMK continued to play the hardball, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) parted ways with the regional party, albeit for now, by deciding to contest the February 19 elections to urban local bodies on its own to fulfill the desires of of the party cadre. The talks were also held amid visible strain in the relationship between the two political parties in the backdrop of an unsavory remark on AIADMK MLAs by BJP floor leader in the Assembly, Nainar Nagendran, at a protest meeting last week. The BJP The BJP raising "forced conversion" in the suicide of a 17-year-old student studying in a Christian school in Thanjavur is also being blamed for AIADMK's strident stance."

Hence, the claim is False. Vanathi Srinivasan did not give any such statement. The news card has been going viral after Annamalai stated that this time BJP will contest on its own.
