Hyderabad: A photo reportedly showing 12 MPs eating while on a hunger strike is being widely shared on Facebook. The MPs were on a hunger strike after they were suspended from the Rajya Sabha.
Fact Check
The claim is false.
NewsMeter performed a keyword search which led us to a video by India TV from 6 December 2021. According to the video, the Opposition launched a protest against the suspension of 12 MPs from the Rajya Sabha. It did not mention any hunger strike.
We found a similar video report published on the YouTube channel of ABP News on 1 December 2021. The description of the video read, "Opposition members of Rajya Sabha sat on protest against their suspension from the House for the remaining part of the Winter session of Parliament."
A report by Hindustan Times said the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha demanded the reversal of the decision of the House to suspend 12 MPs for the duration of the ongoing winter session for creating a "ruckus" during the monsoon session in August. "Protests by the Opposition MPs led to five adjournments, with the House clocking only 45 minutes of proceedings. Earlier, chairman M Venkaiah Naidu refused to take up the issue of suspension for discussion and informed the House that home minister Amit Shah would be making a statement on the civilian killings in Nagaland," it said.
Another report by Business Standard from 7 December said some Opposition members gathered at the place where the suspended MPs along with other colleagues were sitting on a dharna.
It is therefore evident that the claim made through the viral post is false as the 12 suspended MPs held a protest and not a hunger strike. The protest was to demand the reversal of the decision of the House to suspend the MPs.
