Hyderabad: A purported social media post by US President Donald Trump has gone viral. The post reads, “It is my Great Honor to have just signed, from the Oval Office, a Global 10% Tarif on all Countries, which will be effective almost immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP”

Those sharing the post claim that a 10 per cent tariff includes India, increasing the total tariff on Indian imports to 28 per cent. It is being alleged that the 10 per cent will be added to the previously agreed 18 per cent tariff between India and the US.

An X user shared Trump’s post and wrote, “Trump has imposed 10% tarrif again - Now India has to pay 28% tarrif - While US pays O% tarrif to India If this is not a failed Foreign policy then what is it? (sic)” (Archive)

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the claim is false. Donald Trump has not imposed an additional 10 per cent tariff on India. Instead, he announced a 10 per cent worldwide tariff following a ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States.

The Truth Social post by Donald Trump in the claim was shared by the US President on February 21

What tariff applies to India now?

According to a report by The New York Times, dated February 20, the US Supreme Court struck down Donald Trump’s global tariffs. The ruling invalidated many of the tariffs imposed by the US President.

After the decision, Donald Trump responded by announcing a 10 per cent global tariff. When asked about India’s tariff, he said it would remain at 18 per cent as agreed earlier, reported Hindustan Times on February 21.

However, the same report also quoted the White House as saying that, for now, India would be charged a 10 per cent tariff.

The same 10 per cent tariff has also been mentioned in a report by News On AIR published on February 21.

The report stated that a White House official clarified that the tariff on India will temporarily drop to 10 per cent following Donald Trump’s announcement of a new global tariff, and it will come into effect on February 24.

The reports indicate that there is no clarity as of now about how much tariff would be levied on India following the US Supreme Court’s ruling, since it is not clear whether it would be 18 per cent or 10 per cent.

However, it is clear that the claim is false since there are no credible reports that tariffs on India will increase to 28 per cent.

The claim is false.
