FACT CHECK:
The claim is true.
NewsMeter contacted the Golconda Inspector and received confirmation that indeed a woman did file a false gang-rape complaint after her neighbor refused to give Rs 10,000 for medical treatment.
Inspector Chandra Shekar told NewsMeter that the alleged victim lodged a complaint claiming that she was gang-raped by her neighbor and his two friends. She had said that the three men took her out under the pretext of showing her residential property but sexually assaulted her in a car. She further complained that she was threatened with a firearm. She alleged that the men took photographs and threatened to make them public if she disclosed the crime.
"On the basis of this complaint, an investigation was launched. The complainant was sent for medical examination. However, in a short time, the woman retracted her statement and said that complaint was false. Her neighbor was a grocery store owner who regularly helped her out with groceries and ration. One day she had asked him for Rs. 10,000 in the name of medical treatment but he refused. He then began avoiding her when she began constantly asking for the money. The lady confessed that it was her idea to lodge such a complaint against him thinking that it would lead him to pay her the amount. The lady clearly said that the neighbor is not responsible for anything," Inspector Chandra Shekar said.
Currently, the details of the FIR victim's latest statement have been sent for legal opinion to carry forward the case.
