Fact Check: Iran attacked US from 17 directions? No, Trump’s statements misinterpreted
Claim:Donald Trump said Iran attacked the US from 17 different directions amid the ongoing conflict.
Fact:Misleading. Trump made the statement in the context of the Venezuela operation, not the Iran-US war.

Hyderabad: A video featuring United States President Donald Trump is circulating on social media, claiming that he said ‘Iran attacked from 17 directions’.

The US-Iran conflict which escalated in late February 2026 after US-Israel strikes on Iranian targets remains unresolved. The risk of a wider war grew on March 28 as Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis launched their first attacks on Israel, while additional US forces reached West Asia.

In the viral clip, Trump can be seen speaking from a podium, saying, “We knew there was a problem when we noticed at one o’clock in the morning every 32 seconds another airplane, a very fast plane, was coming off the deck of an aircraft carrier. That’s actually the biggest aircraft carrier in the world and every 32 seconds, boom, boom, boom. And it was one o’clock in the morning. So, we said, okay, I think we’re in trouble. But they were ready for us, Johnny. And we were ready. He said we were ready. And then they hit us and they came from 17 different angles. They were here, they were there… we ran for our lives. It was over. And uh, it was over.”

The video was widely shared on Facebook and X. (Archive 1, Archive 2)

One user on X shared the video and wrote, “Trump on USS Gerald R. Ford: “Iran attacked from 17 directions. We fled to save our lives. It was all over.” (Archive)

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the claim is misleading. A video of Trump talking about the Venezuela Operation was linked to the Iran-US war.

Analysis of the video

We took a few screenshots of the video and conducted a reverse image search and found a longer version of the viral clip. The original video was published on YouTube by NBC News on March 28 and shows Trump speaking at the Saudi investment conference in Florida.

The YouTube video is 1:17-hour long. At the 18:11-minute mark, we can hear Trump saying, “Look at what happened in Venezuela. They had other equipment, not ours. They made the mistake of using other equipment. Didn’t work too well. And uh Venezuela was, you know, lot more powerful, but it’s not powerful anymore.”

Trump continued how the US handled the Venezuela operation, and at the 19:27-minute mark, he said, “We knew there was a problem when we noticed at one o’clock in the morning every 32 seconds another airplane, a very fast plane, was coming off the deck of an aircraft carrier. That's actually the biggest aircraft carrier in the world and every 32 seconds, boom, boom, boom. And it was one o’clock in the morning. So we said, okay, I think we’re in trouble. But they were ready for us, Johnny. And we were ready. He said we were ready. And then they hit us and they came from 17 different angles. They were here, they were there, they.. we ran for our lives. It was over. And uh, it was over.”

The part between 19:27 minutes and 20:05 minutes was clipped from the original video and circulated online, falsely claiming Trump made the statement in the context of the ongoing war with Iran.

We watched the complete speech, and nowhere did Trump say “Iran attacked us from 17 different directions”. Throughout his speech, he mentioned Iran multiple times but did not make the statement as claimed in the viral posts.

We couldn’t find any other credible reports that stated that Trump made such a statement at any other events or press conferences.

The comments about getting attacked from ‘17 directions’ were made in the context of the Venezuela operation.

Therefore, we conclude that the claim is misleading.

What is the Venezuela operation?

On 3 January, US forces launched pre-dawn airstrikes in Venezuela and carried out a raid in Caracas to capture President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. They were taken to the US to face charges including narco-terrorism.

Trump said his administration would run Venezuela until a “safe, proper and judicious transition” could take place, adding that the US would indefinitely control the sale of the country's oil.
