Hyderabad: Iran has launched fresh attacks on Bahrain, while Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, intercepted several drones and missiles from Iran. A 29-year-old woman was killed and eight others were injured after a residential building in Manama, the capital of Bahrain, was hit.
After the attacks, a video circulated on social media claiming to show an Iranian missile striking a building in Manama, Bahrain. The viral clip shows a drone or missile hitting a high-rise building and causing an explosion.
An X user shared the video and wrote, “Such an attack on a building! Bahrain’s Interior Ministry said that one person was killed and several others were injured in an Iranian attack targeting a residential building in Manama.” (Translated from Hindi) (Archive)
NewsMeter found that the claim is misleading. A video of a Russian attack on a building in Kyiv on January 9 was falsely shared as an Iranian attack on Bahrain.
Analysis of the video
A reverse image search using keyframes from the viral clip did not yield any results. We then carefully reviewed the video and noticed a logo on the clip that read ‘KAWTAH NEWS’.
On further research, we found that the logo refers to Kashtan News (often named as Kashtan NEWS/КАШТАН news). It is a local independent digital media organisation from Kyiv, Ukraine.
The viral clip was published on the official YouTube channel of the media outlet on January 10. The title of the video suggests that it shows footage of a Russian drone striking a residential building in Kyiv on January 9.
We found more information about the attack in other news reports. According to a report published by Reuters, Russian drones attacked targets in Kyiv on January 9, killing four people and injuring at least 19. The strikes caused significant damage to residential buildings and infrastructure and fires were reported in several districts of the Ukrainian capital.
The video is not related to the recent Iranian missile strike in Bahrain and was captured and published months earlier.
Therefore, we conclude that the claim is misleading.
