Hyderabad: A link claiming that Amazon is giving away exclusive gifts on Valentine's Day is being forwarded on WhatsApp.
Fact Check
The claim is a hoax.
NewsMeter noticed that the viral link that is being shared was not an authentic link and had used a URL shortener (TinyURL).
When we clicked on the link (using a laptop), it showed an error.
When we clicked on the link on a mobile phone, we were directed to a website that was not the official website of Amazon. The text on the website read, "Hello, Welcome to Amazon Valentine's Day Giveaway! Complete the short quiz and win an exclusive gift."
Some of the questions were 'Do you know Amazon?', 'How old are you?', 'What do you think about Amazon?', and 'Would you recommend us to your friends?'.
After taking the quiz, a text appeared saying the answers were being checked. It also said, "You have answered all 4 questions. Your IP address is valid for this promotion. Gifts are available and in stock."
There were also some comments by people who claimed to have received the gifts. We noticed that every time we were directed to the page it showed '11 of 183' comments.
After this, we were told our answers were successfully saved and that we had to select the correct box with a gift inside in three attempts. Then nine gift boxes appeared on the screen for not more than a couple of seconds. There was no time to click on the boxes.
Lastly, we searched the official Amazon site to check if it had launched any such giveaway but found no such announcements.
It is therefore evident that the claim made through the viral post is a hoax. Amazon is not giving away exclusive gifts on Valentine's Day.
