Fact Check: Is this a photo of AR Rahmans daughter? Find out

Hyderabad: Photos reportedly of AR Rahman's daughter Khatija are being shared on social media with the claim that she wears a burqa in India but wears modern attire when abroad.

The post is viral on Facebook, too.

Fact Check

The claim is false.

NewsMeter first performed a Google reverse image and found a report by OpIndia from 16 February 2020 titled "AR Rahman's daughter Khatija Rahman says burqa empowers her after Taslima Nasreen finds it depressing and suffocating". OpIndia had published a similar image that is going viral.

According to the report, "Oscar-winning music maestro AR Rahman's daughter Khatija Rahman took to her official Instagram handle to slam the controversial Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen for calling her burqa 'depressing'. The music composer's daughter took to the social media site to write that it was her choice to wear what she wants and that she feels empowered by wearing a burqa."

The Times of India had on 11 November 2020 published a video of Khatija Rahman talking about being trolled for wearing a burqa.

We then performed a Google reverse image search of the two photos and found the first one on a Facebook page called 'A.R. Rahman - A Ruler of Rhythms'. The photo was uploaded on 1 January 2018. The caption read, "Shakthisree Gopalan and Khatija Rahman with A.R. Rahman sir at his YM studios in Red Hills."

On performing another Google reverse image search of the second image, we were directed to a tweet by Bangladeshi-Swedish writer Taslima Nasrin from 24 March 2013. Taslima Nasrin had shared the photo with the caption, "Sitting outside Indian embassy in NYC, hoping to get an Indian visa. #Nostalgia."

It is evident that the claim made through the viral post is false. A photo of Bangladeshi-Swedish writer Taslima Nasrin is being passed off as the photo of A.R Rahman's daughter with misleading claims.
