Hyderabad: Earlier this month, five relatives of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput were killed in a road accident in Lakhisarai, Bihar. According to The Indian Express, the police said the family was traveling to Jamui from Patna after attending the last rites of the sister of Haryana police officer O.P Singh, Rajput's brother-in-law. The incident took place when their SUV collided head-on with a truck.
A photo of a damaged jeep is now doing the rounds of WhatsApp with the claim that it shows the accident that killed Sushant Singh Rajput's family members. The viral message reads, "At least 5 members of Late Actor Sushant Singh Rajputs family were killed in a road accident. According to police, the family was returning to their home at Bhandar village in Jamul district when their vehicle crashed into a truck coming from the opposite direction." (sic)
NewsMeter received the claim on WhatsApp.
The claim is false.
NewsMeter performed a Google reverse image search which directed us to a report by The Indian Express from 14 September 2021. It had published a photo similar to the one being shared on WhatsApp.
According to the report, "At least eight persons were killed and six more seriously injured in a head-on collision between a jeep and a truck near Marinayakanahalli in Chintamani taluk of Chikkaballapur district in Karnataka. According to the police, the jeep was ferrying 14 passengers including two children to Bengaluru, when the incident took place. All the victims were from rural parts of the Chikkaballapur district. The jeep was tossed in the air with the impact of the collision; it was completely damaged."
The Times of India, Jagran English, and Asia Net News had also reported the incident.
According to the Asia Net News report, the jeep with whiteboard number plate was caught by officials at Srinivaspur taluk and warned not to carry so many passengers. "Fearing seizure of the vehicle, the driver started covering the Chintamani route for some time now. The officials who had come for spot inspection found fault with the lorry driver and accused him of negligence and overspeeding which led to the mishap (sic)," it said.
The Times of India had also published a video report of the incident.
We compared the viral image with the original image and found that there were various elements in the two images that were similar.
It is therefore evident that the claim made through the viral post is false. A photo of a road accident in Karnataka is being falsely linked to the road accident that killed five relatives of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
