Fact Check:

The claim that the image shows an aerial view of heart-shaped Venice is FALSE.

Venice is NOT heart-shaped and the viral image has been created using the mirror effect. NewsMeter searched for an aerial view of Venice city and found several articles that show satellite images of Venice, which is certainly not heart-shaped.

We also found a Facebook post on a page called 'Home Decor Ideas' which clearly states that the image is a mirrored aerial view of Venice, Italy. The photo was credited to @lennart.

Taking a cue from this, we searched for @lennart and found Instagram and Facebook pages of Lennart Pagel of Germany who had created and shared the viral image.

Pagel had posted the photo and wrote, "BREAKING NEWS! Scientists just discovered that the true city of love isn't Paris, but Venice! Swipe to see the scientific proof!* *don't believe everything zu read online. Believe in love. Happy valentine (sic)."

When we observed the image carefully, we found that the buildings, bridges, and ships in the canal are mirrored perfectly proving that it is a mirror image and not original.

According to an article on the website earthobservatory.nasa.gov, the grand canal is S-shaped, which is confirmed by several stock images of Venice.

Therefore, the viral image is a mirror image and does NOT show the city of Venice. The claim that Venice is heart-shaped is FALSE.
