Fact Check
NewsMeter found that the claim is false. Neither PM Narendra Modi nor the BJP has made any announcement regarding their Prime Ministerial candidate for the Lok Sabha polls in 2029.
Has the BJP announced their PM candidate?
We reviewed speeches, press releases and official statements published by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) India and Narendra Modi’s official website. We also checked his verified social media accounts and recent public rally speeches. We found no statement in which Modi announced Yogi Adityanath as a future Prime Ministerial candidate or successor.
We also checked recent media reports and found no credible news coverage confirming such an announcement. If PM Modi had made such a major political declaration, it would have been widely reported by national media outlets.
BJP dismissed speculations
According to an India Today report dated April 1, 2025, the BJP and RSS categorically dismissed the speculation. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “In 2029, we will see Modi ji as the prime minister again.”
The report further stated that when Yogi was asked about being Modi’s successor, he said he does not consider politics his full-time job. Keeping his future political prospects open, he added, “As long as we are here, we are working… there will be a time limit to this too.”
Therefore, NewsMeter concludes that the claim is false. The BJP has not announced any Prime Ministerial candidate and has earlier dismissed rumours about PM Modi’s retirement.
