Hyderabad: With the West Bengal elections just around the corner, speculations are rife of Sourav Ganguly's possible foray into politics. Amidst this, an image of the cricketer with the Trinamul Congress symbol has gone viral on social media. The Bengali text accompanying the image reads "Swagatam Dada".

There are multiple versions of the photo with the BJP and the CPI(M) symbols. The colour of Ganguly's kurta changes depending on the party symbol. For example, he wears a red kurta in the CPI(M) photo and a green one in the TMC photo. Supporters of the respective political parties are claiming that Ganguly has endorsed them.

Fact Check:

NewsMeter found that the claim that Ganguly is endorsing the political parties is FALSE. The cricketer's photo from an incense endorsement has been morphed to create the false narrative.

We performed a reverse image search and found a similar image on Pinterest showing him endorsing the incense brand Cycle Rhythm Agarbathies.

Saurav Ganguly was the brand ambassador for the organization. According to a 2018 article from Hindu Business Line, Cycle Rhythm, from the house of Cycle Pure Agarbathies, roped in Ganguly as its brand ambassador for Bengal for a two-year period.

We also found the same image on the official Facebook page of Cycle Pure (Cycle Rhythm Agarbathies).

We also found a YoutTube advertorial video of Cycle Rhythm with Ganguly.

Evidently, an image of Ganguly endorsing an incense brand has been morphed and shared with false claims. So far, there has been no official confirmation on Ganguly's political entry.
