Fact Check: Morphed photo shows cricketer AB de Villiers holding a Ganesha idol

Hyderabad: Amidst the ongoing Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, a photo of former South African cricketer AB de Villiers holding a Ganpati idol is viral on social media with the hashtag '#happyganeshchaturthi'. The cricketer's fan pages have also shared the image.

Fact Check

The image is morphed.

NewsMeter performed a reverse image search and found a tweet by the International Cricket Council (ICC) dated 3 June 2017. In the original image, de Villiers is holding a trophy, not an idol.

The website icc-cricket.com had carried the same photo in a report dated 2 June 2017 about a press conference the cricketer had held during the ICC Champions Trophy tournament prior to his team's match with Sri Lanka. The same image was also carried by Express and Sports Libro.

Evidently, a morphed image of AB de Villiers carrying an idol is going viral.
