Fact Check: Movie clip shared as Ukrainian soldiers killing elderly during Chechen war

Hyderabad: Amidst the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis, a video of a group of soldiers beating and shooting the elderly is circulating on social media. Netizens are claiming that the video shows the Ukrainian army killing civilians in Chechnya during the Chechen war. Now fighters from Chechnya along with the Russian army are "taking revenge" against Ukraine.

Fact Check

NewsMeter performed a reverse image search and found the details of the video on a website called 'zen.yandex.by'. The article states that the footage is a scene from a film based on the Chechen war. The man in the video who played the role of a Russian soldier is Ukrainian actor Maxim Zapkosni.

The footage was taken from the movie 'The Search'. It was uploaded on YouTube by multiple users. The viral video can be seen at the 3:40-minute mark in the film.

'The Search' is a 2014 French drama film written and directed by Michel Hazanavicius and produced by Hazanavicius and Thomas Langmann. It is a war film and is based on the events of the second Chechen War. The film's plot revolves around a French woman who works for a non-governmental organisation and forms a special relationship with a lost young boy in war-torn Chechnya in 1999. The film is also listed on IMDb.

Evidently, a scene from a film on the Chechen war is being falsely shared amidst the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict claiming that Ukrainian soldiers mercilessly beat an elderly man to death in Chechnya during the Chechen war.
