Fact Check

The claim is false.

NewsMeter performed a keyword search but did not find any reports by the mainstream media about Ahmedabad being renamed Karnavati. We visited the district's official website and saw that the district was still named Ahmedabad.

A DNA report from 11 April 2019, regarding the proposal to change Ahmedabad's name to Karnavati, read, "Gujarat High Court, for the time being, has rested the controversy over the proposed change of the city's name from Ahmedabad to Karnavati and disposed of public interest litigation (PIL) seeking the court's intervention in restraining the government from doing so."

A report by the Indian Express published on 7 November 2018 titled "Now, Gujarat govt keen on renaming Ahmedabad as Karnavati" reported, "Taking a cue from Uttar Pradesh, the Gujarat government has now expressed its interest in renaming Ahmedabad as Karnavati. The government Tuesday said it's keen on rechristening Ahmedabad as Karnavati if there are no legal hurdles. The development comes after the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government renamed Allahabad and Faizabad as Prayagaraj and Ayodhya, respectively."

However, there are no reports of Ahmedabad being renamed Karnavati. It is therefore evident that the claim made through the viral post is false.
