Fact Check: No bonus for farmers, viral news bulletin is fake

Hyderabad: A screengrab of an ABP News bulletin claiming that the Union government has announced a bonus for wheat farmers is viral on WhatsApp. The screengrab carries a picture of Union minister of state for agriculture and farmer welfare Narendra Singh Tomar. It states, "Wheat farmers will get a bonus of Rs. 525 per quintal." It also claims that this decision came following low wheat production.

FACT CHECK

NewsMeter could not find any reports that supported this claim. If the Central government had decided to give bonuses to farmers, it would have been reported by mainstream news outlets. Also, we found no such reports on the ABP News website or its YouTube channel.

The screengrab was taken from a YouTube video uploaded on the channel "Anaj Mandi Expert" on 16 March 2022. The video made the same claim about the bonus but did not cite any sources nor did it talk about the process to avail of this bonus.

In September 2021, the government had raised the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rabi crops for the financial year 2022-23 by 2.03%. From Rs. 1,975 per quintal in 2021-22, the MSP rose to Rs. 2,015 per quintal for the year 2022-23.

However, the Centre has not announced a bonus of Rs. 525 per quintal for farmers. The viral screengrab has been edited. Hence, the claim is false.
