Fact Check

The claim is False.

NewsMeter performed a Google Reverse Image Search which led us to a report published by Dainik Bhaskar headlined `GRP jawan shot himself: Reached Prayagraj by train escort from Kanpur, body found in a toilet; was in depression after leave was denied'

According to the report, GRP head constable Chintamani Yadav shot himself with his pistol in the police line on Monday. The head constable's body was found in the toilet of the police line. He was posted on escort duty in Kanpur. Neither the police nor the family members are able to tell why Chintamani took this step. Khuldabad police have sent the body for post-mortem.

Sources said Chintamani was in depression after he was denied leave. Kanpur GRP CO Kamrul Hasan said the reason for the suicide is being ascertained. He said the issue of leave has not come to their notice.

Taking a cue from this, the team performed a keyword search which led us to a report published by the Times of India and Jagran on September 20, 2021.

"35-year-old Chintamani Yadav, a resident of the Manda police station area of Prayagraj, was appointed constable in 2005. These days he was posted in Kanpur. He was posted on Ajmer-Sealdah Express," Jagran reported.

"Cops at the GRP line were shocked after they heard two gunshots and spotted the head constable in a critical condition. They arranged a vehicle to take the critically injured head constable to a hospital. A bullet had reportedly pierced the head of the deceased," The Times of India reported.

The fact-checking team also found a tweet by the Bareily police. Police said a communal color is being given to the whole incident. This incident took place on September 20. Police said the head constable was posted at GRP lines Kanpur. Police said he committed suicide by shooting himself in Prayagraj.

It is therefore evident that the viral claim is False.
