Hyderabad: A WhatsApp message asking "bright students coming from poor financial background" to contact NGO Prenana has gone viral. According to the message the NGO is supported by the Infosys Foundation. It promises to provide financial help to poor students who have cleared Class X exams this year and scored more than 80 per cent.
NewsMeter found that this news is misleading. Infosys Foundation does not support the NGO.
Fact Check:
The viral message lists three phone numbers. We tried to contact them but all numbers were out of service.
Next, we searched online using relevant keywords and found that the same message has been circulating on social media almost every year since 2010. This proves that the message is not recent. We found that many news organizations had debunked the viral claim earlier and stated that the message is misleading. (Click here and here to read them)
NGO Prerana is an organization in Bangalore that provides financial aid to merit students from underprivileged backgrounds. NewsMeter contacted the CEO of Prenana, Ram Sastry, who said that the viral message has been circulating for the last eight-nine years. He said that although Infosys was a donor a few years ago, it currently does not support the NGO. The CEO said that the viral message is no longer valid.
Hence, it is clear that NGO Prerana is not supported by Infosys. This particular scheme is no longer applicable. The NGO helps poor students under various other schemes.
