Fact Check:
The claim that the branch of Karachi Bakery in Mumbai has closed due to the name controversy is FALSE.
The protests took place in November 2020 and the shop has been shut recently.
Manager of the bakery Rameshwar Waghmare said the name controversy had nothing to do with its shutting down in Mumbai. The shop shut down as the old lease agreement lapsed and the landlord had been demanding a higher sum as rent which was unviable. Business volumes had dropped due to COVID 19, he added.
According to him, the bakery has all valid licenses and approvals. The decision to close down is based on business factors. Waghmare also said that the owner will decide whether to rent a new space or allow the brand to lapse in Mumbai. An ice cream parlor has currently come up in its place.
The historic confectionery is part of the Hyderabad-based chain run by a Sindhi Hindu migrant family, the Ramnanis, who migrated from Karachi after partition.
The confectionery has branches in Bengaluru and other cities. The chain is headquartered in Hyderabad.
