Fact Check: No new rules issued by Indian railways, viral post is false

A message claiming that 10 new rules have been issued by the Indian railways which will be effective from July 1, is viral on social media.

Hyderabad: A message claiming that 10 new rules have been issued by the Indian railways which will be effective from July 1, is viral on social media.

A few of the alleged 10 new rules read:

1. The hassle of waiting will end. Passengers will be given the facility of confirmed tickets in Suvidha the train run by the railways

2. From July 1, 50 percent amount will be refunded on cancellation of Tatkal tickets

3. There has been a change in the rules of Tatkal tickets from July. Ticket booking will be done for the AC coach from 10 AM to 11 AM and for sleeper coach will be booked from 11 AM to 12 PM, among other 10 rules.


Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the claim is false.

Firstly, it was noticed that the same message was circulating on the internet since 2015. This indicates that the message is not recent. (Click here and here to view)

Secondly, since the claim was viral for a long time, the Ministry of Railways issued a detailed press clarification in June 2017 and in 2020. "This news is totally incorrect and baseless. A section of media has also published this news without verifying it from the authorized sources of the Indian Railway system," the Ministry said.

The Ministry of Railways in 2020 also tweeted its clarification saying it has not issued any protocol regarding passenger travel post lockdown.

The staggered timings for booking the Tatkal tickets of AC and non-AC were notified in June 2015. The official circular can be seen here.

Therefore, the message of 10 new rules issued by the Indian Railways is False.
