Fact Check

The claim is misleading.

Newsmeter began its investigation by performing a Google Reverse Image Search of the first image which directed us to a report published by Amar Ujala on May 22, 2018. The newspaper had published a set of five images. The team found the third image in the report to be similar to that of the viral image. The report was titled, "See how the coaches of New Delhi-Andhra Pradesh Express got burnt, the passengers saved their lives like this."

"The fire caused panic among the passengers. As soon as the train was stopped and the passengers got out of it, they started running. According to the information, all the passengers are said to be safe. After being informed, several fire tenders reached the spot to control the fire. Railway officials have attributed the cause of the fire to a short circuit. The amount of damage caused by the incident is not yet known," the report said.

On performing Google Reverse Image Search, the team was directed to Zee News report on YouTube on May 21, 2018. The description of the video said, "Andhra Pradesh AC Superfast Express train catches fire near Gwalior". Similar visuals can be seen from 0:04 seconds.

The team searched whether any such incident had taken place in Chapra. Navbharat Times reported, "Sadbhavna Express Train Survived The crash In Chapra, Bihar. Driver Saves Hundreds Of Railway Passengers' Lives".

However, nowhere in the report did it mention that the incident led to any of the coaches catching fire.

A similar report was also published by Jagran on May 16, 2021.

It is therefore evident that the claim is misleading. The viral images are of 2018 incident in Andhra Pradesh. A train accident did take place in April 2021 at Chapra, but the coaches did not catch fire. In fact, due to the alertness of the driver so many travelers were saved.
