Hyderabad: A video of water being thrown at women wearing hijab is viral on social media.

"ABVP Students moral values are declining day by day...there can be nothing worse than this, wastewater is being thrown on Muslim Hijabi girls," reads the caption of the video.



Fact Check:

The claim is false.

NewsMeter conducted a reverse image search of the key-frames of the video on Google. We found that the video is from Sri Lanka's Eastern University where a group of students is seen ragging juniors. It is available on social media since 2019


Next, we performed a keyword search and found several media reports from 24 November 2019 including a video report by Lanka Sun-News uploaded on their Facebook page.

The fact-checker also found the video on the Youtube channel of Colombo daily.


On searching further with the given clues, our team found the video was published on a news website `Puthithu' run by Sri Lankans living abroad on 24 November 2019.

According to the report, a lecturer at Southeastern University said that it is a B water bucketing- a subculture of bucketing in Universities.

And the students of the University said that the activity was not only aimed at Muslim girls, but it included all.

Hence, the claim is false.
