Hyderabad: A photo of the president of the Indian National Congress, Sonia Gandhi, along with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has gone viral on social media with the false claim that Sonia Gandhi took Mr. Singh on a tour of Bangladesh during the UPA regime
A Facebook user posted the photo and wrote, "Once upon a time Sonia Gandhi once took Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on a tour of Bangladesh!"
NewsMeter found that the claim is FALSE as this image was taken when Congress leaders met Sheikh Hasina in New Delhi in October 2019.
We performed a reverse image search and found a report by Dhaka Tribune from 6 October 2019 that had carried the same image. According to the report, Mrs. Gandhi met Sheikh Hasina in New Delhi in 2019.
"During the meeting, Sonia Gandhi and Sheikh Hasina exchanged pleasantries and recalled their old memories. Congress president was accompanied by former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and her daughter Priyanka Gandhi," the report said.
The New Indian Express report read, "Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi on Sunday accepted visiting Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's invitation to visit her country for commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh's liberation….. A Congress delegation comprising Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rajya Sabha MP Anand Sharma met the Bangladesh Prime Minister here on Sunday morning, a day after she met Prime Minister Narendra Modi."
Evidently, the image was not taken during the UPA regime and the claims are FALSE.
