Fact Check: Photos from 2019 anti-Modi protest in US shared as recent

Hyderabad: Two photos showing demonstrators holding placards comparing Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Adolf Hitler is going viral on social media. It is being claimed that an anti-Modi protest was held in the US during the PM's recent visit to the country. No Indian media has reported about it, it is claimed.

The images were accompanied by a caption that reads, "Does India ask why the Godi media is not reporting Modi's grand welcome in the US?" (translated)


Fact Check

The claim is false.

First, NewsMeter performed a reverse image search and found that the two viral images are from 2019. Several social media users had posted them on Twitter and Facebook on 23 and 24 September 2019.


Taking a cue from this, we looked for credible news reports and found some about the protest along with photos.

According to these reports(Click here and here to read), protesters gathered in Houston during Mr. Modi's US visit in 2019. The protest erupted at the 'Howdy Modi' event where around 50,000 people had gathered. Protesters carried anti-Modi placards and raised slogans on various issues like Kashmir and the abrogation of Article 370.

Further, with the help of keyword searches, we came across a blog, shaktish.blogspot. It had posted many images and videos of the protest that took place on 22 September 2019 in Houston.

While dozens of Indian-Americans gathered at Lafayette Square in front of the White House chanting slogans and holding placards during Mr. Modi's 2021 visit, the viral photos comparing him with Adolf Hitler are from 2019.

Hence, the claim is false.
