A picture of three burqa-clad women walking behind a man holding a chain that is tied to their legs, is viral on social media.

This image has been shared several times over the years. "What are these violent animals or the dreaded prisoner? Who are being held in chains (sic)," reads the caption


Fact Check:

The claim that the burqa-clad women walking behind the man are chained is FALSE.

When searched for the image using Reverse Image Search in Google and Yandex, we found several similar images published on some websites back in 2011. In these pictures, there is no chain on the legs of the women.

According to the reports, this image is from Afghanistan. This image has been used across articles to show the oppression of women. It also featured in a story by Barbara Walters tried to show how women customarily walk 5 paces behind their husbands.

This image was also uploaded on the website `askchange.com'. The same picture has been published with a caption: "Grounded: Women were not allowed to leave their houses without their husbands."



Therefore, the original image does not show the women with their legs chained. We can see that they are just walking behind a man. So, the claim is FALSE.
