Fact Check: Ratan Tata's fake statement about liquor goes viral

Hyderabad: A screenshot of well-known industrialist Ratan Tata is widely being shared on social media.
"Liquor sales should be sold through Aadhaar Card. Government food subsidies should be stopped for alcohol buyers. Those who have the facility to buy alcohol can buy food. When we give them free food they pay and buy alcohol. : Ratan Tata," reads the text on the screenshot.
Fact Check
The claim is False.
NewsMeter firstly had a close look at the viral screenshot. The spelling of Ratan Tata was stated as 'Rathan Tata' instead of 'Ratan Tata. According to the information available on the official website of Tata, the full name of the Chairman, Tata Trusts, and Chairman Emeritus, Tata Sons is Ratan Naval Tata.

On further investigation, we performed a keyword search. The search led us to a report published by The Indian Express on September 05, 2021. The report was titled, "'Not said by me': Ratan Tata says a viral post on using Aadhaar for liquor sales is fake news."
"Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons Ratan Tata has debunked a statement attributed to him on the sale of liquor using Aadhaar cards. The business tycoon has flagged it saying it is "fake", and clarified that it was not said by him," read the report.
Apart from this, we found a similar report published by NDTV on September 03, 2021.
"Mr. Tata, at the time, had people verify media circulated on WhatsApp and over social media platforms before sharing it. 'If I have something to say, I will say it on my official channels,' Mr. Tata had written," the report read.
Hence, it is therefore evident that the claim is False. No such statement about selling liquor through an Aadhar card was made by Ratan Tata.
