Below are a few posts. Click here to view.
The claim is false. This incident did not take place in Banaras.
NewsMeter noticed that the same image was viral in 2018 with the same claim. Netizens falsely claimed that the incident of the road collapse took place in Banaras, which was debunked by few news organizations.
In 2017, Divya Spandana, the head of the Congress party's IT cell (who first posted the picture with the wrong claim and later corrected it) tweeted that the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation confirmed it was a road collapse in Ahmedabad. In July 2017, due to heavy rainfall in Ahmedabad, a road collapsed near Swastik Chowk.
NewsMeter performed reverse image and found a tweet by Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh on July 29, 2017. The same image was also found on the Twitter account of IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt. The tweets mention that the image is from Ahmedabad. The picture is of a road sinking near Swastik intersection of the city of Ahmedabad. The same was also reported by SI NEWS TODAY.
Thus, the claim is false.
