Hyderabad: The Twitter handle, @SmeerWankhede, which claims to be the account of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) zonal director Sameer Wankhede has been tweeting about the official's innocence amidst the drugs case involving Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan. Wankhede is the lead investigator in the case.

Some tweets read "I am being made a part of dirty politics" and "I am overly honest. That's why I am guilty in everyone's eyes". Many social media users believe this is Mr. Wankhede's official account.

The account has over 17,000 followers at the time of writing this article.

Fact Check:

The account is fake. The NCB official does not have a Twitter account.

Although the account was created in August, the first available tweet is from 23 October. This indicates that all previous tweets could have been deleted to avoid suspicion.

While scrolling through the comments, we found that many users have addressed the account user as "Sneha Agarwal" in August and tagged "@iSnehaAgarwal" while replying to the user.

Taking a cue from the comments, we checked the Twitter IDs of @SmeerWankhede and @iSnehaAgarwal using the online tool TweetBeaver. A Twitter ID is a unique numeric ID that does not change even if the Twitter handle changes.

NewsMeter found that the Twitter ID of @SmeerWankhede is 1422016623163047937. Using the Wayback machine and viewing the archived version of @iSnehaAgarwal's account, we found the same Twitter ID. This confirms that @SmeerWankhede was earlier active as @iSnehaAgarwal as both usernames have the same Twitter ID.

Moreover, Sameer Wankhede is not on twitter. There are several imposter accounts of the official but none are his official Twitter account.

Clearly, the viral account is an imposter account.
