Fact Check: Scam Alert! GPay link promising Rs. 1,999 cash reward is scam

Hyderabad: A GPay link is circulating on social media with the claim that Google Pay is offering rewards up to Rs. 1,999 through scratch cards.

Fact Check:

The claim is false.

NewsMeter searched the official website of Google Pay and found no such announcement.

We scratched the reward card displayed on the purported 'Google Pay' website. A reward amount was revealed inside the scratch card. When you scratch the reward card and click the "CLAIM YOUR REWARD IN BANK" button on this website, you will be directed to the Google Pay application on your mobile where you will be asked to pay the same reward money displayed on the scratch card to an unknown bank account.

We found out about fraud activities on the Google Pay help page which states that Google Pay and other digital wallets will not require customers to pay money or enter their UPI PIN in order to accept money or receive cash rewards. In 2020, a few bloggers had posted videos on their Facebook pages describing the scam of these fake Google Pay websites.

Google Pay is a digital wallet and online payment platform that allows users to make contactless payments in person with their mobile phones, in-store, and on supported websites, tablets, and watches. Google Pay UPI transactions are entirely online. Google Pay does not require customers to physically collect cash rewards from their banks.

Hence, the claim that Google Pay is offering cash rewards of Rs. 1,999 through scratch cards is false. This purported Google Pay link is a fraud.
