Hyderabad: Social media users are sharing an image of a waterlogged street.

Users claim the picture was taken in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.

The picture shows a waterlogged road. A half-submerged man holding an umbrella is trying to wade through the flooded street.

The caption accompanying the picture reads, #यूपी के "स्मार्ट सिटी" #वाराणसी में अच्छा हुआ ये आदमी घर से #छाता लेकर निकला था। वरना बेचारा भीग जाता।

"UP 's `Smart City' # Varanasi was good in the man of the house # Came out with an umbrella. Otherwise, the poor person would get wet (sic)," reads the translation.

The claim is false.

NewsMeter performed a reverse image search and we came across several news items. A photo was published on `The Atlantic', on August 15, 2017. Its caption reads: "A man wades through a flooded street during a heavy downpour in Agartala, the capital of the northeastern state of Tripura, on August 11, 2017."

This photo was taken during the heavy rains in Agartala on August 11, 2017. The photo is also posted on `Getty Images'. That year the northeastern states including Agartala received heavy rains and flood situations. About 20,000 people were affected by rains in Agartala.

However, many parts of Varanasi have been inundated in the recent past due to rain. its photos and videos are avialble on the internet.
