Fact Check: Two-year-old UP picture falsely linked to Delhi violence

Hyderabad: Post communal violence in Delhi's Jahangirpuri, a picture is widely being shared on social media.

In the picture, some policemen can be seen passing through a street. Along with the policemen, two persons in plain clothes with saffron gamcha are also seen.

Social media users are linking this picture with Jahangirpuri violence. Users are lampooning Delhi Police for patrolling along with saffron-clad 'dharma rakshaks'. Many people have shared this picture on Twitter.

Fact Check

The claim is False.

NewsMeter began its investigation by performing a Google Reverse Image Search. The search led us to a post uploaded by a Facebook user on April 19, 2020.

During the investigation, we also found similar tweets from April 2020. People said this picture is of Budaun in Uttar Pradesh. A video related to the picture also went viral at that time. On having a close look at the picture and the video, it is clear that both belong to the same place and time.

On further investigation, we found a tweet by Budaun police on April 20, 2020. Through the tweet, the police officials had stated: "Sho Kotwali told that both the persons are shown in the above photo are Corona Warriors Mukesh Kumar and Sunil Gurjar who had visited the locality and appealed the locals to download the Arogya Setu App and stay in their respective homes."

Hence, it is evident that the claim is False. The viral image has nothing to do with the recent Jahangirpuri violence. Two people seen in the viral image along with the police officials were Corona warriors.
