FACT CHECK: UP Dy CM has not resigned, viral claim is false

HYDERABAD: A screenshot of a YouTube video by Nation TV is circulating on social media with the claim that Uttar Pradesh's Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prakash Maurya has resigned from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and has joined Samajwadi Party (SP).

The post is being shared online with a caption that upon the translation reads, "Hearty congratulations and best wishes to Keshav Prasad Maurya on joining the Samajwadi Party".

FACT CHECK:

The claim that Keshav Maurya has resigned from BJP and joined SP is false.

We searched online for news reports on this issue but found none. No credible news organization has reported Keshav Maurya's resignation.

The viral screenshot holds the name of a YouTube channel called Nation TV. On June 2, the channel posted a video with the same viral headline that upon translation reads, "Kesav Prasad Maurya resigns from BJP, joins Samajwadi Party".

This headline is misleading as the video talks of a possibility of a change in the party but does not confirm it. The video thumbnail has now been changed to "ą¤•ą„‡ą¤¶ą¤µ ą¤Ŗą„ą¤°ą¤øą¤¾ą¤¦ ą¤®ą„Œą¤°ą„ą¤Æą¤¾ ą¤²ą„‡ ą¤øą¤•ą¤¤ą„‡ ą¤¹ą„ˆą¤‚ ą¤øą¤Ŗą¤¾ ą¤•ą„€ ą¤øą¤¦ą¤øą„ą¤Æą¤¤ą¤¾?" That translates to, " Can Keshav Prasad Maurya take membership of SP? (Click here to view the video) However, this news is false. The change in the thumbnail itself indicates that the headline was an error.

A tweet from the official fact-checking handle of the UP government clearly dismissed the false information. "There has been no change in the cabinet of the Uttar Pradesh government. The news being run on social media by a YouTube channel named Nation TV is fake," it said.

Uttar Pradesh's Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prakash Maurya is still a part of BJP. He has neither resigned nor joined SP. Thus, the claim is false.
