Hyderabad: Amidst ongoing protests over BJP member Nupur Sharma's controversial remarks about Prophet Muhammad, a video of an elderly man being beaten by the police has gone viral on social media with the claim that "Hindutva radicalised cops" are assaulting an elderly Muslim protester.

The video is being shared with hashtags like #MuslimsUnderAttackinIndia and #MuslimLivesMatter.

Fact Check

NewsMeter performed a reverse image search and found a longer version of the viral video on YouTube from April 2020. The location was mentioned as Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.


According to reports by New Indian Express and News Nation, the video shows the Bareilly police attempting to lathi-charge people who were violating lockdown norms and attacking a police patrol party during the Covid-19 lockdown in April 2020. The incident took place in Karampur Chaudhary village in the Bareilly district where several people had gathered on the road and some of them were playing cards.


It is clear that the video is old and unrelated to the Nupur Sharma controversy.
